YAS Website

Whilst out of our area, we have included this site because, unlike most forts within Yorkshire, it can be visited and there is something to see! Not to mention the fact that it contains the best preserved Roman bath house in Britain.

The fort stands above the River Wear just north of modern Bishop Auckland, and was built to control the main route north from York , what we now call Dere Street. Occupation of the site began in the early Flavian period, and continued in to the 5th and 6th centuries.
