R. Goodburn, Roman Britain in 1978 in Britannia vol 10, 1979  p287

Old Gayle Lane (NY 875893), Hawes [N. YORKSHIRE]: rescue-excavation of this square defended site, thought to have been a fortlet or signal station, revealed no evidence for Roman activity. It is probably prehistoric in date.
