Newland Ironworking Site
Roman Yorkshire Map (Industrial) Enlarge

In 1961 - 1964 excavations of a complex site thought to contain an early medieval chapel revealed a 5 room Roman building, probably a small farmstead or villa (see Drax Villa). Nearby, a Roman slag heap containing fragments of iron, charcoal and a few pieces of 3rd century pottery was uncovered. No other evidence beyond the slag has yet been found.
