This site shows occupation from the Iron Age to the early 4th century, with a progressive development of structures from Iron Age round houses, through a late 1st / early 2nd century stockade, to a fine 3rd / 4th C courtyard villa, with coins from Domitian (81-96) to Constantine I (306 -337).

In the early 1960s the decision was made to remove three mosaics from the site as they were suffering from frost damage, and they are now on display in Hull Museum. The Charioteer mosaic and its accompanying Leopards panel were found in 1971, making it clear that this was one of the most prestigious villas in the north.

“Ruston Roman Villa” by I.M. Stead is available for £8.50 plus £4 p&p from YAS
